THERE’S A LOT OF TALK ABOUT…

Being a dark skin female. I’m not going to go in on the topic ( right now lol) But I’ve been reading and listening for a long time. The whole thing makes me sad , because honestly I’ve never felt ugly or inferior because I had darker skin yet many females have. I hear these stories of women rubbing clorox onto their skin with truth brushes and the self hatred they have is too much to handle. They say society did it to these women , that the Euro-centric ideas of beauty caused this. But I’m wondering why exactly it never happened to me. I’ve hung out with light-skinned girls my whole life , all my closest friends are light skinned , my moms light-skinned, I have no light-skinned female cousins, the majority of my aunts are light skinned, my own mother, grandmother and great grandmother are light skinned. Ofcourse, I noticed I was different but I never felt what others feel. I grew up with positive cliches in my head like “Everyone is beautiful” and ” You can be whatever you want to be” I believed them, i still do lol. I always thought having dark skin was nice every now and then I ran from the sun because I didn’t want to get a tan ( no one really likes for the way they look to be altered without them controlling it ) .  I love the skin I’m in and I just want others too see that there is no correlation between skin color and beauty.

My name is Kay! I am a 20 year old college stude from Baltimore, Maryland. Being a darker skinned African American female, I have been affected by shadeism and have seen other girls, particularly African and African American suffer internally over this issue. It’s been drilled into some of our minds that dark skin is unattractive by family members, the media and peers. Sadly, some of us begin to really believe it. This shouldn’t be at all. I want to encourage and inspire girls to overcome this complex about their skin color. I want to help all girls with a darker skin complexion feel confident and comfortable in their skin. Brown skin is beautiful. Dark skin is beautiful. Let’s embrace it! This site/movement is for you. *I do not own any images unless stated otherwise*
