Q & A With Brittney Marshall, Founder Of ‘MyBrownBox’: “The Best Way For Women Of Color To Discover And Experiment With Premier Products That Complement Their Natural Beauty And Personal Style”.

http://forbrowngirls.tumblr.com/

Brittney

K: Hey Brittney! Are you the sole founder of ‘mybrownbox’?- What inspired you to come up with this amazing idea?

B: Hey Karyn! Yes, I am the sole founder of My BrownBox. I came up with the idea to start My BrownBox when I heard about Birchbox, which is a subscription beauty service for women. I subscribed to Birchbox, and when I received my first box I was disappointed because most of the products did not complement my skin complexion or hair texture.
I immediately thought to myself, “what if I created a box that caters to women of color”- something that complements our natural beauty and personal style?
I was extremely excited and began to work on My BrownBox a week later.

K: Please tell us a little more about yourself: background, had you always aspired to be an entrepreneur?

B: Well let’s see… where shall I start. Go green. *Giggles*
I graduated from Michigan State University May 2011, with a B.A. in Advertising. All throughout college I was working on another business, which I have put on hold for a short while. I grew up in a very business-oriented family; my father and brother both are business owners, so I’d have to say that my dad’s entrepreneurial spirit has rubbed off on my brother and I quite a bit. My mother is very much into fashion and makeup, so I’m a combination of both my parents. Have you ever seen business, fashion and beauty collide? That’s me.
I don’t take myself too seriously, so I never thought that I’d be an entrepreneur, but I am loving it.

K:What kinds of products can we expect to receive upon signing up for ‘mybrownbox’?

B:Upon signing up for My BrownBox ‘Brown Beauties’ can expect to receive products from a wide range of beauty categories each month. Subscribers will receive makeup, hair care, skin care, body care, nail care, fragrances, beauty tools and even lifestyle products.
It will be like receiving a birthday present each month!

K: What are your top 5 favorite beauty products?

B: My top 5 Beauty favorite products are:

  1. Kinky Curly Knot Today -Leave in Conditioner
  2. Organic Shea Butter
  3. Lancome Maquicomplet- Complete Coverage Concealer in Bronze
  4. Angled Eye Brow Brush
  5. MAC- Blot Powder in Medium Dark

K: I notice you are natural, as am I!- what are your favorite styles? who is your natural hair crush/idol if you have one?

B: Yes, I am natural! My favorite hairstyle is the Wash & Go. It’s quick, curly and cute, and that is all I need. My natural hair crush is Solange. I love her hair and style! So if you ever see photos of Solange on My BrownBox social accounts you can be sure that I posted them. Haha

K: What’s one quote that keeps you going/motivated?

B: A quote that keeps me motivated is “Dreams don’t work unless you do.” I remind myself of this daily.

K:Who inspires you?

B: My brother inspires me. We are one.

K: What do you see in store for the future of your business?

B: Oh Gosh, this question makes me so excited and overwhelmed all at once.
I see My BrownBox being a global brand for Brown Beauties everywhere. The ultimate goal for My BrownBox is to create a welcoming community that encourages women of color to connect, inspire, and inform one another. I’ll let God order my steps on this one.

Makeup tutorial

It took me a long time embracing my skin color because during my childhood, people always called me Midnight or (LBG)Little Black Girl. There was even this time where I started buying these types of soaps (4got what they were called) to make me lighter. Crazy, right? Now,I’m encouraging my little sister and my youth members to embrace their beautiful brown skin because we are virtuous women and our skin color is flawless.

Dear Entertainment industry,
two dark skinned black people usually DO NOT have a daughter with European features. Please stop casting half black girls in dark black family’s on shows, movies and commercials as though a white parent cant exist. this does several things.
1: Tells black girls/women that  their skin isnt beautiful unless its light.
2: Tells us our eyes arent beautiful unless they are green.
3:Generally says we are not beautiful because we do not “live up” to european standards of beauty.
4: kind of makes it seem like a biracial couple is something to be fucking ashamed of, and therefor cannot exist.
5:keeps rolling the “one drop rule” into the future.
and i can go on forever.
And just use common fucking sense.two people that look like they stepped out of the fucking Serengeti DO NOT usually have a child that looks like Jean Butler. there would probably need to be some kind of mixing, and mixing aint bad. but stop fucking with us. We dark skinned gals with dark hair and dark eyes are pretty enough for television spots too.
goddammit.

A big misconception people have about darker skinned women is that they cannot wear bright lipsticks. Some women shy away from certain colors because they think they’ll look silly & some people will even say out of ignorance that certain colors don’t “look right” on darker skin. (SOME, not ALL),
The trick is, ladies, to find the right shade to complement your skin tone. So you could just have the perfect red, pink, orange or purple lipstick waiting for you but you haven’t had the courage to discover it yet!
So experiment with different shades with the cheap brands of lipstick(that’s what I did) & when you feel comfortable enough that the color suits you, even getting honest opinions from family and friends, then invest in a more quality brand of that same shade.
Here are some articles about lipcolor & darker skinned women I found to be interesting & that may help you decide which color you want to try:
