Maintaining Your Mane While Working Out!
Truthfully speaking, who hasn’t skipped out on a workout because you were worried about messing up your hair? Don’t feel ashamed because I know I have many of times. The equation that used to dominate my mind was something like “fresh relaxer + sweat = a hot mess”.
However, since I have started a new healthy journey, both physically and mentally, the local YMCA has become my best friend. We as women, and not just brown skinned women, have to understand that the health of our bodies is just as, if not more, important than the condition of our hair. An article titled “Women’s Top 5 Health Concerns” (here’s the source link http://women.webmd.com/guide/5-top-female-health-concern?page=3 ) from webmd.com lists heart disease, breast cancer, osteoporosis, depression, and autoimmune diseases as the most concerning health risks for women. The article also states that getting regular exercises can help offset four of these five health issues. So ladies having relaxed, natural or texlaxed, hair is no longer an excuse to avoid getting healthy. >Here are a few styles to keep your mane looking cute while getting in shape.<

Personal Post: The “Big Chop”

It’s crazy, I never thought I’d feel so confident with a little bit of hair lol. Growing up I went through that phase where I always wanted it to be long, straight, in my face or down my back…now I forget it’s on my head! I’ve grown.

A Curl is a Curl: Are 4c Spirals Coveted?-via A Curl’s Best Friend.com

Ways You Can Stop the Cycle and Help Celebrate 4a-c Hair:

Affirmations- Giving positive affirmations whether they are to your self or to a stranger is a huge step. A little encouragement goes a long way.
Watch the Lingo- Words all have a different weight and meaning to them depending on the context in which they are used. Be sure your jokes or terms of endearment are not offensive or self-loathing. Kinky is kinky as long as it is said and received with love.
Special Occasion-Try rocking your natural hair. Do a twist out. Add a flower accessory. There is nothing wrong with wanting a change and straightening your hair but know that you don’t have to in order for it to be special.
Being the Butt of the Joke- Example: while attending any costume parties, ask yourself before sporting an afro wig unless you are going as something that reflects beauty. Sometimes that can read as “my hair is joke”. Be conscience of those around you and whether or not they are laughing with you or at you.
Reflect- Ask yourself if you too harbor any feelings of doubt and contempt for textured natural hair. It’s a difficult conversation to have but a necessary one.
