Brown Skin + Sunscreen!

http://forbrowngirls.tumblr.com/

Question:” Black women don’t have to wear sunscreen because brown skin can’t burn, right?”- Wrong! Women of color need sunscreen just as much as any other race. The sun’s UV rays are very damaging to the skin and can cause skin burns, wrinkles, skin discoloration, and take away from our natural glow. This became very clear to me when my boyfriend, after spending all day in the summer sun at a soccer tournament, was completely sun burned across his shoulders and back. After being on aloe application duty for about a week, I quickly learned how vital it is for people of color to use sunscreen. So, before walking out of the house make sure to put on sunscreen to keep your skin beautiful and healthy. Check out Madamenoire.com for an informative article further explaining the importance of sunscreen.

A Poem for Brown Girls <3
My worth is unmentionable; you cannot put a price on me Portuguese and black sister with God’s love to proclaim. Light skinned sista with light colored eyes. Oh yes we come in different colors, in shapes, and size. A very proud black woman, a true artifact of class. You couldn’t rate me with a dirty coin. A dime piece?!!! PLEASE I will surely pass. I love and fear God, there’s no shame in my game. Wont was a second ignoring a man calling me baby, ma, or shorty… My mother already gave me a name. You Cant determine my being a woman from the wiggle in my behind, But do it by how I respect people whether they’re cripple, crazy, or blind. For Jesus is love and he surely loves you and me. And for that I love myself…I hope there are a few more sistas out there like me - Dr. Red

“This post was inspired by a couple of young ladies letting me know that they are struggling with some insecurities. As a result they are feeling down, and hopeless. It is really saddening to hear things like this because you want to help make someones pain go away but you don’t know how or where to start. So, here is my start!-To all the young ladies who may be struggling with self-confidence or any issues in their lives, I want you to know this:

You are NOT alone. Every time I read, hear or say these words, I think of Michael Jackson’s song by the same title. When I was younger, “You Are Not Alone” was my comfort song and listening to it when I was sad would make me feel a whole lot better. In the song, Michael is saying to his loved one, that no matter how far apart they are, he is still with them, thinking of them and loving them. Aside from the words “You are not alone”  being one of MJ’s song titles the sentence has a much deeper, universal meaning: Everyone goes through something, everyone has a story, everyone has pain…” click here for full post.

Meaningful Melody: India Arie-Video

“I’m not the average girl from your video
And I ain’t built like a supermodel
But I learned to love myself unconditionally,
Because I am a queen

I not the average girl from your video
My worth is not determined by the price of my clothes
No matter what I’m wearing I will always be
India.Arie

When I look in the mirror and the only one there is me
Every freckle on my face is where it’s suppose to be
And I know my creator didn’t make no mistakes on me
My feet, my thighs, my Lips, my eyes, I’m loving what I see!”

My name is Kay! I am a 20 year old college stude from Baltimore, Maryland. Being a darker skinned African American female, I have been affected by shadeism and have seen other girls, particularly African and African American suffer internally over this issue. It’s been drilled into some of our minds that dark skin is unattractive by family members, the media and peers. Sadly, some of us begin to really believe it. This shouldn’t be at all. I want to encourage and inspire girls to overcome this complex about their skin color. I want to help all girls with a darker skin complexion feel confident and comfortable in their skin. Brown skin is beautiful. Dark skin is beautiful. Let’s embrace it! This site/movement is for you. *I do not own any images unless stated otherwise*
