Best Decision
SOME DAYS I WONDER WHAT IF I NEVER WENT NATURAL. FOR THOSE WHO HAVEN’T EXPERIENCED THE BC FIRST HAND, THEY CAN’T RELATE. AFTER I CUT MY HAIR I KNEW THERE WAS NO TURNING BACK, I WAS SCARED AND FELT THE LONELIEST IN MY LIFE AT THAT TIME. THERE WAS NO ONE IN MY LIFE I FELT AS THOUGH COULD RELATE WITH ME OR HOW I WAS FEELING. FOR THE FIRST TIME IN MY LIFE I WAS COMPLETELY LONELY. I TALKED TO MYSELF MOST DAYS AND BARELY EVER LEFT THE HOUSE. IN THOSE FIRST TWO MONTHS AFTER CUTTING MY HAIR OFF I LEARNED SO MUCH ABOUT MYSELF AND CHARACTER. IT WAS ALSO THE PIVOTAL MOMENT IN MY LIFE WHERE I LEARNED TO LOVE MYSELF, NAKED. NAKED AS IN NOTHING TO HIDE BEHIND. I HAD NOTHING TO HIDE ANYMORE, IF YOU LOOKED AT ME YOU COULD SEE RIGHT THROUGH ME. I MISS THAT PHASE IN MY LIFE, I FEEL AS THOUGH THERE ARE STILL SOME THINGS I DID NOT LEARN. AFTER CUTTING OFF MY HAIR I LEARNED TO FALL IN LOVE WITH ME. IT WAS THE MOST AMAZING TIME IN MY LIFE. A TIME OF SELF-REFLECTION, SELF-ASSESSMENT, AND SELF-DISCOVERY. NO MATTER WHAT HAPPENS I WILL NEVER RETURN BACK TO A RELAXER EVER AGAIN, I DID NOT COME THIS FAR TO LOVING ME JUST TO LET GO TO LEARN ALL OVER AGAIN. It has been one of the best decisions I’ve made thus far.

Natural Hair Combing Tips!
A common misconception about natural hair is that once your hair is no longer chemically processed it doesn’t need to be cared for as much. The thought here is that your hair is stronger when it’s not chemically processed. This is true to some extent. Your hair is stronger when it isn’t chemically processed but it needs just as much if not more care.
Something a simple as detangling your curls can cause major damage if it isn’t done properly. Combing natural hair is a completely different ball game from combing permed hair. Below are some tips for detangling natural hair.
- The best tools to use are either a wide toothed comb or a denman brush. These detangling tools can glide through your curls gently without causing any breakage. You can alse detangle using just your fingers.
- Be patient and gentle. Seperate your hair into sections and detangle one section at a time. If you come across a knot relax and gently work through it. The only sounds you should hear is your comb or brush gliding through your hair. If you hear any cracking or popping noises it could be your hair breaking.
- Never comb your hair dry. Dry combing natural hair can lead to breakage. Keep a spray bottle with water handy to moisten your curls every time you detangle. You can even add a little olive oil to the water for extra moisture.
- To really minimize breakage during detangling use conditioner. Applying conditoner to your wet hair before detangling can really help the comb or brish glide smoothly and effortlessly through your hair. You don’t even have to rinse it out afterward. Your natural hair will absorb it and it will leave your hair soft and moist for days!
- You don’t have to detangle daily. Two or three times a week is enough. Detangling to frequently can lead to breakage.

Sometimes I dream I look like this person or I talk like that person, but everyday I wake up from that dream, I thank God that He made me just the way I am! Yeah I’m as dark as a blackberry, my voice is as sweet as honey, and I am “fluffy” like a marshmallow, but these are the things that define the beauty I display on the outside regardless of what media/television say I should look like..
So kings and queens, love every part of you, good and bad, and others will have no choice but to love you and respect your uniqueness as you do yourself ! ♥

Well from experience, I can say that it was a great decision for me to make. I feel much more confident having experience having shorter hair and being not so dependent on length. Even though I transitioned for about 6 months, when I finally did decide to BC, it was still shorter than I ever had it- it felt great & easy! So my advice would be to not be so afraid of cutting your hair. Yes it does take some getting used to, but it will grow back. I would also say keep your hair moisturized and stay away from heat! I have only used heat once since stopping relaxers last august. opt instead for rolling your hair and letting it air dry or do braid outs, twist outs, bantu knots or protective styles. I have a list of sites that I think will help you along your journey I will post in a few.
* If anyone else has any advice, please feel free to add on!
